How to Find Your Wiper Blade Size: 3 Ways and Common Mistakes

Man checking a wiper blade next to a car

“Just get 60 centimetres, that'll do” – that is how people buy wipers that later hit the seal or leave an unwiped sector right in front of their eyes. Wiper size is not an approximate value but a specific pair of numbers for a specific model, a specific generation and sometimes even a specific side for the steering wheel. Here is how to find your size reliably.

Why “approximately” doesn't work

  • The driver's and passenger's side blades are almost always different lengths – the difference can be up to 20 cm.
  • The size changes between generations of the same model, sometimes even at the facelift.
  • A blade that is too long hits the seals and the other blade, strains the motor and jams in frost.
  • A blade that is too short leaves a blind zone – as a rule, right in the driver's field of view or at the A-pillar.
  • On right-hand-drive cars the sizes can be mirrored – important for UK imports.

Method 1: Select by model (the most reliable)

Selection catalogues are based on the wiper manufacturers' data for each body style and year of manufacture. In the TopWipers vehicle search you choose make → model → generation/year and get the exact lengths for both sides, the rear wiper and the right mount type. At the same time you can see which ranges (flat beam, hybrid) exist for your connector – we have a dedicated overview of the mount types.

Method 2: The owner's manual

The factory lengths are listed in the section on windscreen wipers. The drawback: if a previous owner has already fitted something different, the manual is the only source for how it should be.

Method 3: Measure the fitted wipers

Measure along the blade with a tape measure and round to standard values (the usual increment is 25 mm: 400, 425, 450 … 700 mm). The drawbacks are obvious: you may copy the previous owner's mistake, and you learn nothing about the mount type. Use this as a cross-check, not as the main method.

Common mistakes

  1. “Longer cleans better” – no: longer than the factory length means hitting the bonnet edges and extra strain on the drive.
  2. Forgetting the rear wiper – it has its own size and often its own connector.
  3. Two blades of equal length “for symmetry” – the asymmetric factory lengths are no accident; they follow the geometry of the windscreen.
  4. Confusing inches and millimetres – both figures appear on packaging: 24" = 600 mm.
  5. Choosing the length, overlooking the mount – a blade with the right length and the wrong adapter won't fit; check both.

FAQ

Can a blade be 25 mm longer than the factory size?

Technically it sometimes fits, but the risk of contact with the seals and the other blade rises, especially in frost. We advise against deviating.

Why is the driver's side blade longer?

The zone in front of the driver is crucial for visibility; the geometry of the wiper linkage is designed so that the long blade clears it as completely as possible.

How do I find the size of the rear wiper?

Through the same vehicle search – the rear wiper is listed separately. Measuring is harder here: many rear wipers have integrated special connectors.

Does the size affect the price?

Hardly: neighbouring lengths in a range usually cost the same or differ by €1–3. There is no point trying to save on the size.

Don't guess, look it up: choose make and model – the exact sizes along with the mount type appear automatically.
